Since the 1950’s, the Fornasetti name has been synonymous with a certain kind of magic. A merging of art and craftsmanship where whimsical design generates fantastic, surreal, and metaphysical worlds all of their own. The designs are bold, fearless and finished to the finest of details while staying true to their functionality.
Piero Fornasetti (Milan, 1913-1988) was one of the leading designers of the 20th century, alongside being a painter, engraver and interior designer. He focused his attention on everything from theatre to Renaissance painting and the timeless techniques of engraving and printing. It was in the 30’s when the true magic began. He ran his own print shop and started creating his own motifs which caught the attention of Gio Ponti. They worked on a series of interior projects together and shared the same ideology and cultural affinity. They believed in the possibility to industrially produce everyday objects enriched by decorative elements and render them as true pieces of art. In turn enabling culture and beauty accessible to all.

The crucial turning point in his career came in 1952 when he encountered the face of Lina Cavalieri within the pages of a magazine. The enigmatic face became his mythical muse and the centre of the Tema e Variazioni range with over 500 reproduced versions created. These variations are amongst the most followed creations of the Fornasetti range and are printed on everyday objects like furniture, accessories, and, of course the iconic and collectable plates.
To carry on Piero’s legacy his only son Barnaba Fornasetti embraces the family’s heritage by experimenting with the foundations laid by his father. Barnaba has kept his father’s collections alive by re-releasing original designs and creating his own, all while managing a company determined to keep a humble size (around 60 people) and never betraying the key component of authentic craftsmanship. After all these years, the iconic designs remain in the spotlight with a true following. They are articulated across many mediums like wallpaper, furnishings and ceramics.
